Accessorial charges and fuel surcharge

Draft, pending legal review

This page is a draft. It has been prepared for review by legal counsel and has not been approved yet. It sets out how we intend to operate, and it is not legal advice to you or to anyone else.

If anything on this page differs from the quotation, the bill of lading or the signed agreement covering your shipment, that document governs. If you need our position on something confirmed before you ship, ask us in writing and we will confirm it in writing.

What this page covers

What makes up a freight bill, when each accessorial charge applies, and how the fuel surcharge works.

This page explains when a charge applies, not how much it is. Amounts are on your quotation and on your rate confirmation, because they depend on the lane, the volume and the account. If you want a charge priced before you ship, ask us and we will quote it.

How a freight bill is built

Every invoice we issue has the same three parts.

  1. Line haul. The charge for moving the freight, quoted and billed per skid.
  2. Fuel surcharge. A percentage added to the line haul charge, explained below.
  3. Accessorial charges. Charges for work beyond a straight dock to dock movement. If nothing beyond the ordinary happened, there are none.

Applicable taxes are added to the total.

Accessorial charges and when they apply

Accessorial charges, what triggers each one, and how it is measured. Amounts are on your quotation.
Charge When it applies How it is measured
Waiting time, also called detention Our driver waits at a pickup or delivery beyond the free loading or unloading time. Per hour or part hour after the free time.
Tailgate or liftgate The address has no dock and the freight has to come off the truck on the tailgate. Per shipment.
Inside delivery The freight has to be moved past the threshold rather than left at the dock or door. Per shipment.
Residential or non commercial address Pickup or delivery at an address that is not a commercial receiving location. Per shipment, per address.
Appointment or timed delivery The consignee requires a booked appointment or a specific time window. Per shipment.
Notify before delivery We have to call ahead before we can deliver. Per shipment.
Failed pickup or delivery We attend and cannot load or unload: nobody there, freight not ready, delivery refused. Per attendance.
Redelivery We go back after a failed delivery attempt. Per attempt.
Storage We hold freight because it cannot be delivered or has not been collected. Per skid per day after the free storage time.
Reconsignment or address change The delivery address or consignee changes after we have taken possession. Per shipment, plus any additional line haul.
Extra stop A shipment picks up or drops at more than one address. Per additional stop.
Re-weigh or re-measure correction The actual weight or dimensions differ from what was declared to us. The charges are recalculated on the actual figures, plus a correction charge.
Oversize or overlength skid A piece is larger than a standard skid footprint or cannot be stacked. Per piece.
Dangerous goods handling We carry dangerous goods under an arrangement agreed in writing beforehand. Per shipment.
After hours or weekend service Pickup or delivery outside our normal operating hours, arranged in advance. Per shipment.

Free time, where it applies, is stated on your quotation. If an accessorial is likely on a lane you run often, tell us and we will quote it into the rate so it stops being a surprise on an invoice.

The fuel surcharge

  1. The fuel surcharge is a percentage added to the line haul charge. It is not applied to accessorial charges or to taxes.
  2. It moves with the price of diesel, so it changes over time. The percentage that applies to your shipment is the one in effect on the day we pick the freight up.
  3. The percentage that applies is stated on your quotation and is shown as its own line on the invoice, so you can always see the line haul and the surcharge separately.

Weights and dimensions

We may re-weigh and re-measure any shipment, and we correct the charges to the actual weight and dimensions. This is not a penalty, it is arithmetic: a skid that was declared at 200 kg and weighs 500 kg took space and capacity that were priced for something else.

The declared weight matters twice over, because the total weight of the shipment is also what our liability cap is calculated on. See our liability for loss or damage.

How to reach us

Write to us by email or by post. Email reaches us fastest. If your message is about a specific shipment, quote the waybill number so we can find it.
